You know when you’re hungry, right? That seems like a silly question, but it’s something to think about. When you think you’re hungry, you might actually just be thirsty! It’s easy to mistake the two feelings. Thirst and dehydration are both felt in the same area, and it is easy to confuse the two signals that your body is sending.

So how do you know when you’re truly hungry? How can you really tell if your body actually needs food, or if it just needs water? For starters, gauge how much water you’ve had so far in your day. Sometimes it’s obvious, and we have that, “I haven’t drank any water yet today” moment. That’s simple.

If you’re still unsure, try this simple method…
Drink an 8 oz. glass of water at the first sign of that hungry feeling. Now, wait at least 15 minutes. It takes a little time before our physiology in search of water is separated from that of our search of food. Do something to take your mind off of your hunger – make a phone call, go for a walk, take a shower… SOMETHING! (Fifteen minutes goes by fast when we’re preoccupied and not obsessing on hunger.)

If you’ve waited 15 minutes and you were just dehydrated, you will feel satisfied. If the hunger continues, then eat! Don’t ever starve yourself. That is counterproductive to fat loss and actually causes our body to hang on to fat. If it isn’t time for one of your three meals, then grab an apple or some walnuts. Snacking on the RIGHT foods is great!

Remember also that all drinking does not count as hydration! Even though tea and coffee are made primarily from water, they are diuretics that actually dehydrate our bodies. (more on that in another blog!)

So how much water do we need? That’s a tough question. Everyone’s needs are different. If you do drink coffee, you need extra water. If you work out or sweat a lot, you need even more. In Colorado, we’re ALL dry externally and internally. We need more water (and moisturizer!). The bottom line is to just drink more water!!!

So just keep in mind, water and hunger can feel the same. Try water first! And make sure you’re not just eating out of boredom.
